Stone Butch Blues and serial killers

On Thursday we begin reading Stone Butch Blues (post still forthcoming). As well as lectures on "acceptance". I'm sorry but the lectures are going to be completely pointless.
By the time you hit college you pretty well are either going to be able to accept different people or you're not. You might become a little more comfortable with them on an individual basis, but your prejuducies are already in place.
Take me for example. I try to be open minded. I'm not racist or homophobic. Well no more so than most. I have my issues with the inner city kids. More their love for for loud obnoxious music than their skin.
Some of my best friends in High School were bisexual. Bothered me when they asked my opinion on how hot certain people were but... I dealt with it. Unfortunately I don't talk to any of them anymore. They were the type of friends you swear you'll keep in touch with but it's just not that important because you were friends by accident not because you had anything in common? Great for High School but once you move on to college it's "Oh do you remember Breezey? She was crazy. Wonder whatever happened to her." And then don't think about it again until the High School reunion. Yeah that kind of friends.
Speaking of friends I only have one that I've made any attempt to keep up with. Known her since fifth grade, forced upon each other by a teacher. Only to discover I was only a day older than her and we had the same taste in books. We've been friends ever since. Minus a few months in eighth grade when I was a bit of a slime mold. And yes, I admit that that was entirely my fault. Now she's engaged to this guy I've met once. Seemed nice enough I guess. He was nice enough to give us a chance to talk. He was a little spooky though. Just a tad too quite. Like he was deciding which part of my sister's show cows would taste best. Of course Chan was too so I suppose they're perfect for one another.
On the serial killer front the paper is progressing nicely. Albeit it's a tad spooky how many of these guys were never caught. And I'm not just talking Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac Killer. There are a ton of them out there! Watch your backs!!!

That is a scary thought about the serial killers...

"They were the type of friends you swear you'll keep in touch with but it's just not that important because you were friends by accident not because you had anything in common?"

I hadn't thought about it like that but that makes a lot of sense. I hate to think about the friends I've lost touch with even though we did have lots in common (usually my fault) but there were also a lot of people who were just sort of in the group, but not really close and that doesn't both me so much.

Friends by geography and calendar rather than real interests in common. People have a lot of friends like that...they come and go in our lives, enriching it just the same.
Good post...very thoughtful and thought provoking. I knew you were smart and this just proves it.

Hey, Jen, you should try doing research on the psycho killers. They're scary.
Most of my friends it's my fault as well. i just don't have the time or the want to go find them and catch up.

Mom, of course you think I'm smart you're my mother it's mandatory. But thank you for the compliment just the same.

I agree with your comment that most people have already formed their prejudices and made their judgements on groups of people by the time they get to university. I know I certainly already had!

I don't think that means you can't ever change though, people can, and do, it's just that little bit harder.

I also know what you mean about the friends. I think everybody has friends like that, although they might not realise it until they leave high school and find themselves actually not keeping in touch as much as they thought they would!

Lol the he guy wanting to eat the show cows! That IS rather odd! o.O

I don't think it makes you unable to change just less likely. Plus if you go away to school you're spooked any way so changing becomes even harder. But humans are amazingly adaptable, so anything is possible!

I knew senior year I probably wouldn't keep in touch with them. To be honest I didn't think I would keep in touch with Chantele either. Just because I never consider myself the type of person someone would want to stay in touch with.

It was kind of funny. We actually had fun with it. He was told to stay away from my sister's cows but to have a ball with some of the other ones. I swear he and Chantele were planning what meals they could get out of each and every cow!
