Booking Through Thursday

But, enough about books … Other things have words, too, right? Like … songs!

If you’re anything like me, there are songs that you love because of their lyrics; writers you admire because their songs have depth, meaning, or just a sheer playfulness that has nothing to do with the tunes.

So, today’s question?

  • What songs … either specific songs, or songs in general by a specific group or writer … have words that you love?
  • Why?
  • And … do the tunes that go with the fantastic lyrics live up to them?

You don’t have to restrict yourself to modern songsters, either … anyone who wants to pick Gilbert & Sullivan, for example, is just fine with me. Lerner & Loewe? Steven Sondheim? Barenaked Ladies? Fountains of Wayne? The Beatles? Anyone at all…

Lyric wise I have to say that Keith Anderson's Adaleine gets me

"First naked lady I ever saw was that tattoo on my uncle's arm"

That song is so sweet and sad.

Also Hal Ketchum's Small Town Saturday Night

"Lucy you know the world must be flat

'Cause when people leave town they never come back"

That song always made me think of my hometown, it's tiny and amazing

yet if you leave you'll probably only be back for a quick visit

Sweethearts of the Rodeo Midnight Girl in a Sunset Town

"Knew everyone from miles around we'd lived here all our lives"

Reminds me of me. Love that small town you grew up in but it's just not for you

Kansas Carry On Wayward Son

"Carry on my wayward son there'll be peace when you are done

Lay your weary head to rest don't you cry no more"

I first heard this on the tv show "Supernatural" and for some odd reason, I just love it!

The Kingston Trio Everglades

"He was born and raised around Jacksonville

A nice young man not the kind to kill

But a jealous fight and flashing blade sent him on the run

Through the everglades

well the posse went in and they came back out

They said he'll die and there ain't no doubt

It's an eye for an eye so the debt it paid

He won't last long in the everglades

But now and then the natives would say they seen him

a-runnin through the everglades"

That's not in order lyrics just some hand picked favorites but while I know other bands do this song, my old dead dude do it best (I'm pretty sure all but one of The Kingston Trio is dead, they may all be I know the Kingston Trio touring now is not any of the "original memebers")

Welcome to the sunday challenge first off, I have two song that are my favs right off, The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkle and King of the road by Roger Miller. The lyrics and music to both work well together.
I figure you have heard they are making Ayan Rands: Atlas Shrugged into a movie. I hope this stays true to the book, it is one of my favorites as is anything by Patricia Cornwell.
Later...Ed

Thanks. It sounded like a fun challenge.
I've never heard "The Boxer" but I do love "King of the Road".
I've never heard of Atlas Shrugged. It's good? I may try it!
I've never read Patricia Cornwell. My mom does I think.
Thanks for stopping by.

I'm a little behind reading blogs. Nice list! My answer was short.

I really wanted to put more on but felt that five was enough.
I'm always behind on my blog reading!

I like most anything that Jack Johnson writes and sings, but the song GO On off his latest CD always touches me. After eight years, my Dads death still is such a hard thing for me to handle and the song just says what I feel in my heart.

I must admit I'd never heard of him... Therefore, I am googling him. Looks kind of interesting.
I'm sorry about your father I can imagine dealing with that would still be difficult a few decades later.
